Some of our schools are at or near capacity and we have been experiencing enrollment growth over the past few years. Every child who lives within our district is entitled to attend the Englewood Public Schools; however, recently there have been rumors that some children are not, in fact, residents.
We require proof of residency when a student first enters the district and at this point there is no proof that students from outside the district are enrolled here illegally. Several other New Jersey districts are hiring outside firms to match addresses against information in the public domain or using investigators to verify where students are living. In response to resident inquiries, our Board of Education has created a subcommittee to look into the cost and logistics, as well as the benefits and downsides, of initiating residency verification beyond our current practice. This subcommittee will report back to the full Board at a later date with its recommendations.
