Blue Ribbon Beacon School of Excellence (BRSE) Award Overview
We are proud to share that our school has been recognized with the Blue-Ribbon Beacon School of Excellence (BRSE) Award, a national recognition that reflects our commitment to high-quality teaching, student achievement, and continuous improvement.
What This Recognition Represents
The BRSE Beacon Award is not automatically given to all participating schools. Schools must complete a rigorous, multi-step process that includes:
• A comprehensive self-assessment using the Blueprint for Excellence framework
• Extensive analysis of student performance data
• Documentation of instructional practices, interventions, and school culture
• Evidence of family engagement and leadership systems
As part of this process:
• Schools receive personalized guidance on completing the self-assessment
• A BRSE team conducts a site visit to validate the school’s findings
• Results are collaboratively analyzed to develop an individualized action plan
• Additional supports may include professional development, university partnerships, and ongoing coaching
This work required significant time, reflection, and collaboration from our staff to accurately represent the systems and practices in place at our school.
About the BRSE Organization
Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence (BRSE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has supported schools nationwide since 2001. Their approach focuses on:
• Providing actionable data and insights for school improvement
• Supporting schools through professional development and coaching
• Promoting best practices, collaboration, and continuous growth
Not all schools that participate in this process receive recognition—awards are based on meeting established national criteria.
How BRSE Compares to the NJDOE Blue Ribbon Program
While both programs recognize excellence, they are separate and distinct:
BRSE (Blue Ribbon School of Excellence) | NJDOE / USDOE Blue Ribbon Program |
National, nonprofit organization | State-led and federally recognized program |
Schools apply and complete a full self-assessment | Schools are nominated by the state |
Includes site visit validation and action planning | Based largely on student achievement data and state criteria |
Focuses on continuous improvement and systems | Highly selective with limited nominations |
Multiple levels of recognition (e.g., Beacon Award) | One designation per selected school |
The BRSE Beacon Award reflects intentional, sustained work in teaching, learning, and school improvement. It is a meaningful recognition of our school’s efforts and growth, though it is separate from the NJDOE Blue Ribbon designation.
Importantly, this work directly supports our long-term goals. We remain on track to pursue and achieve the NJDOE/USDOE Blue Ribbon designation within the next 2–5 years, as we continue to strengthen student outcomes and build on our systems of excellence.
We remain committed to continuous improvement and to ensuring the best outcomes for all students.
