Dear K-8 Parents and Guardians:

I hope your summer has been filled with fun, relaxation, and time well spent with family and friends. As you know, every public school district in New Jersey is required to adopt and teach curriculum aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. We are writing to provide information on the New Jersey’s 2020 Health and Physical Education Standards (NJSLS) and the curriculum that the district will utilize to meet these standards. Final revisions were made to the district’s Health and Physical Education curriculum this summer.

Depending on your child’s grade level topics may include:

·         Personal Safety

·         Human Reproduction and Childbirth

·         Puberty

·         HIV/ AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STDs)

·         Contraception and Pregnancy Prevention

·         Abstinence

·         Healthy Relationships

·         Decision Making

·         Self-Advocacy

We held standards on sensitive topics to the highest possible grade in the grade level band. (Grade level bands include Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). For example, standard 2.1.2. PGD.5: List medically accurate names of body parts, including genitals, must be mastered by the end of Grade 2. In our curriculum, we chose to hold off teaching that standard until Grade 2, and not include it in our Kindergarten and Grade 1 curriculum.

EPSD wholeheartedly supports that parents /guardians should serve as the primary sexuality educators for their children. We also understand that some topics may be uncomfortable for students, parents and guardians.

If you would like your child excused from a specific part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum, please submit in writing, a signed statement to your child’s principal and include the specific curricular unit and lesson objective and / or NJ Student Learning Standard that you would like your child excused from. Your statement will be shared with the appropriate teacher and your child will be placed in a supervised alternative location during the excluded lesson and given an alternative assignment to work on during that time. Our district’s Health and Physical Education curriculum documents can be found here for your reference.

I have also included links the state’s standards:

Grades K- 2:  https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_Kto2.pdf

Grades 3-5:  https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_3to5.pdf

Grades 6-8:   https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_6to8.pdf

Grades 9-12: https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_9to12.pdf

As a district, we have decided that we will incorporate the new standards into one single classroom period (35 minutes) of instruction for Grades 2, 5 and 8 at the end of the year. We also understand that children who are in the classes might want to share some information with other children. Therefore, the periods will occur on the last day of school (June 2023) to minimize information sharing.

If you have any further questions or concerns you may contact your child’s principal and / or Mr. Michael Brown, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. Mr. Brown can be reached at (201) 862-6169.

Respectfully submitted,

Dr. Ronel Cook, Superintendent of Schools

Grados K- 2:  https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_Kto2.pdf

Grados 3-5:  https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_3to5.pdf

Grados 6-8:   https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_6to8.pdf

Grados 9-12: https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/chp/Docs/2020_NJSLS-CHPE_9to12.pdf

Respetuosamente,

Dr. Ronel Cook, Superintendente de Escuelas
